Egret sanctuary (family Ardeidae) known as ^Bird City^ on Avery Island, Louisiana. The sanctuary was founded by Edward Avery McIlhenny in the late 19th century to protect the birds from plume hunters (bird plumes were popular fixtures of ladies hats)
