Piece of fossilised tree trunk in exposed rocks on beach of Curio Bay. site of fossil forest in the Catlins coast south-eastern Southland New Zealand. The fossilised trees date back to the middle Jurassic and are found mainly in green sandstone where the wood has been replaced by silica making the fossils resistant to erosion
