New Zealand's only freshwater prawn farm. Huka Park was started in 1987 using geothermal waste heat from the Wairakei power generating field near Rotorua on North Island. Giant Malaysian Freshwater Prawns (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) were imported in 1988 from Malaysia and after some initial problems a hatchery was developed. Eventual aim is to produce 400 tonnes annually generating some NZ$10 million each year
