Limestone outcrops on cliffs. Punakaiki - South Island - New Zealand. Pancake rocks form the main focus for visitors in Paparoa National Park where huge outcrops of limestone have been formed by a process called stylobedding. This chemical process has caused sediments to be laid down in alternatie bands of durable and less durable layers. Subsequent uplift and weathering has resulted in immense stacks of photogenic limsestone interspersed with blowholes making a spectacular vista drawing thousands of visitors each year
