Grey WHALE - trapped in ice, hole cut by people attempting rescue. (Eschrichtius robustus). Barrow, Alaska, October 1988. Rescue effort: series of holes cut in the ice between the stranding area near the coastline, and the open sea. Two of the original 3 trapped whales were eventually rescued.
