Smooth-handed Ghost Crab with horizontal eyes (Ocypode cordimana). On Home Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean. So called because it largely lacks the ridges inside the large claw. Colour varies according to background. Here on a white sandy beach it is very pale. This crab had just flicked its eyes down to horizontal but quickly returned them to vertical. Is carnivorous and cannibalistic. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region
