England - Aerial view White Cliffs at Beachy Head. The English Channel. East Sussex, UK. These 150 metres high cliffs are the seaward extention of the South Downs. Through the ages the eroded soft chalk cliffs created isolated sea stacks. At one time there were seven of these, known as the Charleses, but they have all disappeared - the last fell in 1875. A lighthouse protects shipping from the shallow waters. Stretching westwards from Beachy Head is a long line of white chalk cliffs, the shape of their gentle dips and contours earning them the name the Seven Sisters
