England - Aerial view, Lake Thirlmere
England - Aerial view, Lake Thirlmere, . Lake District National Park, Cumbria. UK. Lake Thirlmere was originally two smaller lakes, which were joined in 1889 to form a large reservoir to supply fresh water to Manchester. The villages of Armboth and Wythburn (except the church) were lost in the process. The decision to proceed with the plan caused bitter controversy over industrial progress and eventually gave rise to the National Trust
