England - Aerial view, Housesteads Roman Fort and Hadrian's Wall, . Northumberland. Hadrian's Wall is without doubt the most important surviving monument left by the Romans in Britain. As a feat of engineering it was remarkable, 6 metres high, 3 metres wide and built of stone from coast to coast. Its defences were supplemented by a northern dtich, a military road for patrols and supplies, and an earthwork called a vallum, which formed a boundary on the southern side for the military zone. Within this zone were 16 forts, of which the ruin of Housesteads is a fine example.Housesteads is close to the halfway point along the wall, just inside Northumberland. Its perimeter wall is still intact and inside there are the ruins of several buildings, including the commander's house, granaries, barrack blocks and communal latrines
