England - Aerial view. Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. The forest was to become an area of national importance in iron production for centuries. The Romans mined iron ore here and cut wood to make charcoal. The Celts also used charcoal for the smelting of iron. During the 16th century, it was used as a Royal hunting ground, although mining for iron ore continued. Trees were felled for the building of ships and houses. Later, the discovery of coal deposits led to commercial mining operations, which continued until the 1980's
