Founded as monastery in 673 - Destroyed by the Danes in 870 - Monastery refounded as a Benedictine community in 970 - Work on current building began in the early 1080s - Became a cathedral in 1109 - Henry VIII closed the monastery in 1539 but has continued as a Cathedrdal to the present day
